In agriculture, hybrid varieties are cultivars that are direct descendants (F1 generation) of a cross between two or more populations of different plant genetic background (called breeding populations or populations captivity). Terms breeding population to be used as an elder in the hybrid variety is homogeneous in appearance (phenotype) but not necessarily homozygous.
Hybrid varieties created to take advantage of the emergence of a good combination of the elders used. Direct descendants of a cross between two different elders back of the genetic background may indicate a stronger physical appearance and have more potential than both parental outcomes. This phenomenon is known as heterosis, and is the basis for the production of a variety of hybrid cultivars, such as corn, rice, palm oil, cocoa, and a variety of vegetable crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. Heterosis make hybrid cultivars have the ability to grow (vigor) is higher, relatively more resistant to disease, and higher yield potential. Heterosis will emerge stronger when the two parental relatively homozygous and have a genetic background that is relatively far (not many have the same allele). Specialized in the manufacture of coconut hybrids, heterosis phenomenon is not used, but two good qualities of both elders belonging to the descendants utilized. Source : wiki
